陈升的音乐是天马行空和无拘无束的，任何定位都是对他音乐的一种限制。这让他的许多音乐都显得悠扬、清爽，而旋律的走向也是散漫却自由，一如他无拘无束的歌词。在经历了《拥挤的乐园》和《放肆的情人》连续两张专辑的低迷，再到《贪婪之歌》制作期间与公司的冲突，1991年推出第四张专辑《私奔》。陈升以一种近乎于反商业的模式获得了意外的成功，专辑的第一首歌《把悲伤留给自己》开始走红于大街小巷，一度成为KTV的点唱金曲。
