首次爆光《Xscape》中的8首歌曲于1983至1999年间录制，歌曲均是由迈克尔·杰克逊本人深度参与的作品。
《Xscape》项目始于2013年9月史诗唱片公司（Epic Records）主席LA·里德（L.A.Reid）和杰克逊遗产管理委员会执行人之一约翰·布兰卡（John Branca）的会面。里德在担任了两季《X音素》（The XFactor）的评委后接手这个专辑制作，他要求从曲库里寻找能被现代化而不会亵渎杰克逊艺术身份的作品。他不想要没有价值的东西。“我的指导方针很简单。”项目负责人里德说，“如果迈克尔从头到尾唱了一首歌，这就表示他喜欢。如果他唱了好几遍，这就强烈表示他想让全世界听到它。”遗产管理委员会从杰克逊的曲库中找到了24首符合要求的歌曲，里德选中20首，然后又缩减到14首。大多数歌曲都被重新制作了，但只有8首最终入选。
里德精选了最后的曲目，提交给制作人进行加工，他们在给杰克逊歌曲带来新潮现代感的同时也保留了原曲的精髓和完整性。专辑的领衔制作人是Timbaland，里德坚信Timbaland是少数几位制作人之一，可以用庄重、深度和广度来和杰克逊进行艺术上的契合。其他几位参与新专辑的制作人包括罗德尼·杰金斯（RodneyJerkins）、星门（Stargate）、杰罗米·“杰洛克”·哈蒙（Jerome "Jroc"Harmon）和约翰·麦克莱恩（John McClain）。
这张新专辑《Xscape》的名字来自专辑的最后一首歌曲《Xscape》（原名Escape）。制作人在保留迈克尔·杰克逊最本质的声音和最完整的音乐性的前提下，加入了一些符合当下流行的音乐元素。整个过程，用EpicRecords主席L.A. Reid的话来形容就是“同一化”。
